Hampshire cricketers' batting and bowling achievements recognised
It wasn’t only the new LV= County Championship cricket season that was being given its first airing at the Ageas Bowl – home of Hampshire Cricket – this afternoon [Wednesday 10 April]; a new honours board was also revealed in the ground’s Executive Club.
The board shows every first-class hundred and five-wicket-haul recorded by a Hampshire player at the ground since its opening season in 2001 and was presented to the club by Giddy Wells from long-term sponsors Powells.
Wells and Hampshire Cricket Chairman Rod Bransgrove revealed the board during the lunch break in day one of the home side’s match against Leicestershire.
Rod Bransgrove said; “We’ve been planning it for a year or two. It’s really good to acknowledge the individual contributions of players since we came here and it’s particularly nice that there have been a lot of great performances already.”
Among the standout performances on the board are Alan Mulally’s 8-90 against Warwickshire in 2001, David Balcombe’s 8-71 against Gloucestershire in 2012, John Crawley’s 311 against Nottinghamshire in 2005 and Michael Carberry and Neil McKenzie’s record-breaking partnership of 523 against Yorkshire in 2011.
Giddy Wells said; “We’ve been sponsoring the club since 2002 so when Rod approached us and said he would like to acknowledge the achievements of the players, as we have a joinery shop, we thought the very least we could do was to donate the board.”
