Toynbee Secondary School student Oriane Chowdury won the competition

Cricketers Michael Bates and David Balcombe were left impressed by the standard of food at the finale of Hampshire Cricket in the Community’s recent healthy eating project.

The charitable arm of Hampshire Cricket, in association with Solent EBP, launched ‘Cook it for Cricket’ in February – an initiative designed to promote healthy eating and inspire students into cooking.

Students from Oak Lodge, Upper Shirley High, Tonybee Secondary, Crestwood College and Chamberlayne were all tasked with preparing and producing a meal that would be served to Bates and Balcombe on Friday (28th March).

Toynbee Secondary School student Oriane Chowdury’s steamed sea bass with crushed new potatoes was adjudged to be winning dish, handing her a number of prizes that includes two tickets to a home Hampshire match this season.

The competition was judged by Bates, Balcombe, The Ageas Bowl Head Chef, Adam Deubel and Hampshire Cricket Strength & Conditioning Assistant Coach, Nick Karamouzis.

The project was also generously funded by ESF Funding and The Big Lottery Fund.

Hampshire Cricket in the Community Education Officer, Emily Blackburn said: “Today was a great way to end this unique project. After weeks of careful planning and preparation, it was great to see the students arrived with real enthusiasm.

“All the students worked incredibly hard under pressure and the food that was produced was of outstanding quality. This project has been a great way to get young people excited about cooking and learning about where food is produced and we hope that we can get more students excited about cooking and eating healthy in the future.”
