The Hampshire Royals travelled to Chelmsford on Friday in high spirits. The reigning champions were making the trip to Essex atop the Friends Life t20 south group, and were bolstered by the return of talismanic captain Dimi Mascarenhas.
However, the weather would soon dampen Hampshire's mood. Rain initially limited the match to 11 overs a-side, and with Hampshire winning the toss and electing to chase, the two sides took to the field at around 8:40pm.
The Eagles had the better of the first over, with Hamish Rutherford hitting the returning Mascarenhas for two sixes, and ultimately fourteen runs, before Sohail Tanvir removed Tom Westley for a duck in the second. Unfortunately that was pretty much all the action a sold-out County Ground would witness, with the rain returning and the game abandoned after just one ball of the third over.
The point taken from the abandoned game still leaves Hampshire sitting atop the south group, but the reigning champions would have wanted more.
Next up for the Royals are the Sussex Sharks and a trip to Hove on Friday 5th July.
