An opening stand of 131 between Michael Roberts (70) and Sean Terry (60*) helped Hampshire Second XI secure a comfortable eight wicket win in the first of two Second XI Twenty20 Group D matches against Sussex Second XI on Monday 10th June at The Ageas Bowl.
Dimitri Mascarenhas (2-28) dismissed Roy Hamilton-Brown (0) and Joe Gatting (0) inside the first three overs as Sussex looked in trouble at 6-3, batting first.
But 71 from just 38 balls from Nathan Hawkes pushed Sussex to 157-6 off their 20 overs.
Hampshire’s run-chase never looked in doubt with Roberts’ knock of 70 coming from 52 balls and Terry’s unbeaten 60 coming off 51 balls as the home side cruised to victory, two wickets down inside 19 overs.
The second match began very much in theme with the first with Roberts (39) and Terry (55) putting on 95 for the first wicket as Hampshire aimed to set an imposing total.
Despite Hampshire skipper Hamza Riazuddin (24) pushing the hosts past the 150 mark, 4-26 from Sussex captain Matthew Machan helped restrict the hosts to 165-7 off their 20 overs.
Machan then went on to impress with the bat hitting unbeaten 72 from just 38 balls alongside Gatting’s knock of 70 from 25 balls as the visitors secured the nine wicket victory in just 11 overs.
Hampshire Second XI’s next match is another T20 double header, this time against Surrey at Purley CC on Wednesday 19 June.
