A century from Adam Rouse couldn’t prevent Hampshire Second XI falling to a narrow 16-run defeat by Kent 2XI in their Second XI Trophy match on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground.

Seamer Jack Sheppard (2-56) and on-trial spinner Glenn Querl (2-42) both took two wickets as Kent posted 290-7 off their 40 overs with England Under 19’s batsman Daniel Bell-Drummond hitting 132 in just 108 balls (10 fours, 4 sixes).

And Hampshire made a brave attempt to reach the target with Rouse hitting 104 off just 82 balls (15 fours, 2 sixes) and solid support from development contract player Sean Terry (31) and 19-year old Ollie Mills (38).

But unfortunately the home side fell just short of the total, finishing on 274-8 off the allocated overs with seamer Adam Ball the pick of the Kent bowlers with figures of 3-70.

Hampshire will be eager pick up their first win of their Second XI Trophy campaign with an away tie against Minor Counties on 31st May.
