Hampshire began their 2015 campaign on a positive note, as they bowled well in a rain affected first day of the friendly against Surrey at the Ageas Bowl.
Zafar Ansari looked in fine form for the visitors as he hit 70* to help Surrey reach 169-3 on the opening day.
However Hampshire’s bowling unit fought hard in the damp conditions, with James Tomlinson, Chris Wood and new signing Gareth Berg all contributing to help the home side claim regular wickets throughout.
Despite the weather intervening early on, many of Hampshire’s bowlers were able to get some valuable overs in, with Sean Ervine, Danny Briggs, Tom Barber and Will Smith all able to turn their arm over in preparation for the coming season.
The home side started the innings well as Tomlinson claimed his first scalp of the year with the visitors on just 22. Rory Burns (5) was caught behind by Adam Wheater after he took a smart catch to his left.
Vikram Solanki and Zafar Ansari responded with some elegant strokes, before Solanki was dismissed by Chris Wood for 20, with Liam Dawson diving superbly to his left to take the catch.
However, Ansari scored patiently and was supported well by Steven Davies, with the pair both making well-constructed fifties.
Surrey looked comfortable with the score at 164-2, before Davies edged a wide delivery from Gareth Berg which saw the left-hander depart on the stroke of tea for a well-made 57.
After tea, Ansari continued to play with confidence with the 23-year-old looking faultless on his way to an unbeaten 70, before bad light and rain forced the two sides to abandon play for the day, the visitors finishing on 169 for 3 at the close of play.
Play resumes tomorrow at 11am.
