In the first Second XI T20 match of the day the experience of bowlers James Tomlinson and Hamza Riazuddin wasn’t enough to prevent MCC YC’s taking victory from the last ball of the game.

Having been put into bat, Hampshire started well with openers Michael Roberts (42) and Sean Terry (39) putting on 59 for the first wicket in seven overs before the former was stumped off the bowling of Will Root (2-35 from 4). The younger brother of England player Joe Root, the off-spinner then removed Terry in identical fashion with the score on 105.

Adam Rouse (30) and Michael Bates (33) added some quick runs towards the end of the innings pushing the Hampshire total up to 169.

And the home side started the defence that score well with Tomlinson and Riazuddin picking up the wickets of both openers with the score on 11. But Root (20) and Shane Getkate (27) then moved the MCC YC’s innings onto 75.

The dismissals of both batsmen, brought Adam Hose (44 from 29) and captain, Scott McKechnie (38 from 19) to the crease who took the Young Cricketers to 156, requiring just 14 to win after being removed by Tomlinson (2-22 off 4) and Riazuddin (2-36 off 4) respectively.

However, the game went down to the last ball and, with MCC YC’s needing two to win, Dan Hampton (15) responded to by hitting the ball for 6 and securing the two points for the away side.

Match Two Summary: Hampshire beat the MCC YCs by 5 runs

The second game of the day was a much lower-scoring affair with the Hampshire side coming out on top mainly thanks to 37 from Riazuddin and the spin of Robert Gibson (3-21 off 4).

Again Hampshire batted first after the MCC YC’s chose to field but this time they didn’t start so well, losing the top three cheaply with the score on 22. Bates (19) and Riazuddin, however, then added 30 for the next wicket before the former was caught off the bowling of Mohammad Abid (2 -35 off 4) and Riazuddin then added 36 with Gibson (13) to push the score along to 90.

Some late runs from Alex McQueen (16) and Tom Nugent (7) allowed the home side to reach 120 from the 20 overs.

The MCC YC’s response started well as Chris Piesley (21) and Graham Clark (43) put on 66 for the first wicket before both openers fell in similar fashion, being caught off the spin of Gibson.

But the away side still looked well set to reach the runs required until a quick flurry of wickets saw them lose the next three batsmen for the addition of 6 runs leaving them 75-5 after 14 overs.

And some tight bowling from Terry (2-17 off 4) and Tomlinson (1-19 off 4) ensured that the Young Cricketers would only leave Hampshire with two points as the home side successfully defended the 120.
