Day Two
Summary: Hampshire trail Northamptonshire by 278 runs with
eight wickets remaining in their second innings
Northants: 438 all out
Hampshire: 160-2
Scorecard
Jimmy Adams (71*) hit an unbeaten half-century as Hampshire made a solid start to their first innings reply on day two of their LV= County Championship match against Northamptonshire at The Ageas Bowl.
Northants batsman Rob Keogh (221) added 63 to his overnight score to reach his daddy hundred and steer the visitors to 438 all out in their first innings.
Adams led from the front in Hampshire’s reply, and he was well supported by Liam Dawson (46) and Neil McKenzie (22*) as the home side finished on 160-2 at stumps.
Hampshire took four wickets in the first hour of play on day one, and it looked as if they might do the same on day two when James Tomlinson (2-67) and Hampshire’s new signing Ruel Brathwaite (3-112) both picked up an early wicket to leave Northants 387-8.
But unfortunately for Hampshire, Keogh continued to bat fluently as he brought up his daddy hundred in 348 balls (29 fours). And it was only shortly after lunch when Keogh’s resistance was finally broken to hand Dawson (1-29) his first wicket to dismiss the visitors for 438.
And despite Hampshire’s losing one wicket in the afternoon session, Adams and Dawson saw off the Australian fast-bowler Trent Copeland (0-36), who has been excellent with the new ball all season, to go into tea on 64-1.
Despite Dawson falling to off-spinner Matt Spriegel (1-10), it was an evening session which Hampshire dominated with Adams bringing up his second fifty against Northants in 115 balls (11 fours). And the Hampshire skipper was aptly supported by Mckenzie late in the day as the pair led the home side to 160-2 at stumps.

dAY ONE
Summary: Northamptonshire lead Hampshire by 323 runs
with four wickets remaining in their first innings
Northamptonshire: 323-6
Scorecard
Hampshire:

Northamptonshire:

Northamptonshire batsman Rob Keogh (158*) hit his maiden First-Class century to frustrate Hampshire on day one of their LV= County Championship match at The Ageas Bowl.
Four wickets in the first hour of play, including two from David Balcombe (2-72) had left the visitors reeling at 32-4.
And despite two wickets from Hampshire’s debutant Ruel Brathwaite (2-82) later in the day, Keogh put on an impressive display to see his side through to 323-6 at stumps.
There were 71 points between the two sides going into this match, but it was Hampshire who started like the team in second-place as they knocked off the first four visiting batsmen for single figures within the opening thirteen overs.
Northants were 32-4 after a wicket each from James Tomlinson (1-56) and Matt Coles (1-32) came either side of two quickfire dismissals from seamer Balcombe.
However, a stubborn partnership of 64 from Keogh and Andrew Hall (48) prevented any further progress for the home side in the morning session as Northants went into lunch on 96-4.
The one Hampshire seamer not to have not bagged himself a wicket before lunch was debutant Brathwaite. But the former Durham bowler soon put that straight when he picked up two wickets in quick succession to leave the visitors 162-6.
21-year old Keogh was only in the side because of an injury to key-player David Willey but he was becoming the one player that was stopping Hampshire dismissing the visitors before the end of the day. You wouldn't have guessed his previous high score in First-Class cricket was 44 as his assured knock led Northants past 250 - their second batting point.
And Keogh was well supported by Matt Spriegel (61*) as the pair took control of the evening session to push the visitors to 323-6 at stumps.
Recent Form
Hampshire will have been encouraged by the batting contributions of Vince (106), Wheater (140) and new boy Coles (68) against Lancashire. The latter pair put on a record eighth-wicket stand between the two sides of 191 on Saturday but couldn’t stop their team falling to a 122-run loss to the league leaders.
By contrast, the visitors earned themselves a whole weekend off with an innings and 25-runs victory over Glamorgan inside three days last week. Leading run-scorer Andrew Hall (806 runs this season) cashed in during that match with a score of 91 not out and also contributed three wickets.
Trent Copeland (44 First Class wickets this season), David Willey (43 FC wickets) and Steven Crook (40) lead their attack and could all make the magical 50-wicket mark by the end of the season.
