A fantastic recovery knock of 65 not out from Academy wicket-keeper Lewis McManus wasn’t enough to prevent his side falling to a five wicket Southern Electric Premier League loss to Bashley (Rydal) at a blustery BCG on Saturday.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, they were in trouble early on as, despite decent starts from Jake George (26), Oli Green (26) and James Halson (25), none of the top order were able to kick on and the young Royals were left 95-6.
But, together with Matt King (21), McManus lifted his side to a more respectable score of 165 before, 15 runs later, running out of partners.
Senior team prospect, Sean Terry (24) then got his club side off to a good start, putting on a 61-run opening partnership with Neil Thurgood. The latter would go on to make 80* to steer his side across the line despite 2-42 from Rob Gibson and tremendous bowling figures of 1-11 from seven overs from Jack Wood.
The result gave the Academy four points to their opponents’ 25.

The Academy, unfortunately, also lost in the Quarter Finals of the Southern Electric T20 Cup on Sunday. Having made 166-8 through good knocks from Halson (56*), George (24) and Gibson (23), Totton and Eling knocked off the runs with seven wickets down, Wood once again the stand out bowler with figures of 3-22.
The final will be played at The Ageas Bowl on Thursday 2 August at 7pm with a reserve day (in case of bad weather) of Friday 3.
