Gloucestershire batted manfully to hold Hampshire off and secure a draw against their promotion chasing opponents on day four of this LV= County Championship match at Bristol.

Led by centurion, Ian Cockbain (112), they trickled along at a gradually dwindling run-rate in warm, sunny conditions ideal for doing just that.

Collectively, they moved from 102-4 at the beginning of the day to 277 by the brink of 5pm, when Jimmy Adams (0*) and Neil McKenzie (0*) saw off an over each before hands were shaken. They’d been left 273 to win with only 15 overs in which to do so.

Having lost Dimi Mascarenhas from their attack with a shoulder injury the visitors couldn’t find the cutting edge they needed and, though there were some moments to savour for the travelling support (James Tomlinson (2-73) taking two wickets in as many balls and Adams (1-4) claiming a rare scalp) they were too few and far between.

The three points for the draw, added to five bonus points, takes Hampshire to second in the table pending Kent’s ongoing match against Essex at Canterbury. They are ahead of Yorkshire on games won.
