Hampshire’s development-contracted batsman Sean Terry put in a Man of the Match performance to ensure that his Academy colleagues were denied the end to the season they would have wanted, losing by 90 runs to Bashley (Rydal) in this Southern Electric Premier League fixture on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground.

Terry – son of former County player and manager, Paul – made 76 on the way to his side recording 260-6 from their 50 overs. He then took 2-31 from his nine overs of off-spin as the Young Royals ended all out for 170 inside 44 overs of the reply.

Terry saw off 86 balls and batted alongside four different partners before eventually falling to the leg-spin of Rob Gibson to make the score 138-5. At that stage the match was in the balance, particularly with two new batsmen at the crease.

But two partnerships of 50+ put the visitors in control and ensured the Young Royals would have to register a score they had only once made all season (in their high-scoring loss to Bournemouth at The Ageas Bowl.)

But regular wickets meant that no partnership made it above 30 until the eighth-wicket stand between Lewis McManus (47) and Matt King (15) reached 43. Unfortunately, by that point it was too late and the Academy’s desperation was characterised by the run outs of both King and Tom Barber (2) to round off the innings.

After a long, hard season for the Academy they finished ninth in the SEPL Division One Table, taking an average of 10.2 points from their 18 games. However, with such a young side having another years’ experience under their belt, they are sure to improve going into next season and will look forward to a better return then.
