Table
A 112-run partnership between the Academy’s James Haggaty (65) and Lewis McManus (41) took them close, but not quite close enough, as their side lost this ECB Southern Electric Premier League match against St Cross Symondians by 16 runs on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground.
A four-wicket haul by Matt King (4-42) and a brace of wickets by Mo Abdurahman (2-27) left St Cross struggling at 93-5.
But the Winchester side, who currently top the 50-over pennant table, rallied through George Adair (55), who enjoyed fruitful partnerships with former Hampshire all-rounder Lawrie Prittipaul (24) and Jordan Finney (35) to post a handy 216-8.
In response, however, the Academy also struggled in the opening exchanges and were playing catch-up after Richard Logan (4-41) and off-spinner Finney (3-30) reduced them to 64-5 (Wilf Marriott 25), then 80-6.
Haggaty and McManus did their best to move their side to 192 without further loss and put them in with a shout of victory, but the task was beyond the Young Royals, who closed 16 runs adrift at 200-9.
The result leaves the Academy second to bottom in the Premier Division table.
