Matt King’s six-wicket haul checked Totton & Eling’s brave bid to chase down a Hampshire Academy total of 260-9 on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground – and enabled the Young Royals to celebrate a narrow 11-run win.

Totton were definite outsiders when they slipped to 134-6, but David Taylor (38) and Kush Mohod, with a destructive 81, almost turned the tide.

But King, whose figures of 6-34 were a Premier Division best, nailed both batsmen in his second spell to break a 96-run stand.

Totton fell away, losing three late wickets for ten runs a closing 249-9.

Hampshire’s 260-9 was built around a 110-run opening partnership between Wilf Marriott (78) and Ollie Green (59).

Five more batsmen made it into double figures as the Academy slipped to 206-7 before James Haggaty (30) hoisted the total up to 260, teenage Waterside leg-spinner Harry Henley-Smith taking 3-53.

King created immediate inroads into Totton’s top order, leaving the visitors rocking at 24-3.

Marc-Antony Eysele’s 58 held things together in a stand with Sam Walker (29) but, at 95-5 and, later, 134-6, Totton were second favourites.

But Mohod, who has spent the past few seasons playing Hampshire League cricket for Winterslow, thumped the ball about the park, with two sixes and seven fours in a 57-ball 81 which enlivened the proceedings.

With Taylor alongside, Mohod took Totton to 230-6 … only for King to have both batsmen caught and end the Eels’ fightback.
