A quite incredible second innings bowling return of 9-20 from Hampshire seamer James Tomlinson guided his side to a 10 wicket thrashing of Kent in their Second XI Championship match at Mote Park, Maidstone.

The home batsmen simply couldn’t make a clean connection with the left-armer’s deliveries as Tomlinson clean bowled three, had two caught behind, trapped a further two lbw and even caught and bowled one to ensure that only two opponents made it into double figures.

Kent finished 45 all out, leaving Hampshire’s batsmen a target of 49 runs to chase for victory; a feat openers Michael Roberts (30*) and Sean Terry (19*) achieved within seven overs.

Earlier in the match another stunning innings from Bilal Shafayat (164) ensured Hampshire stayed in the game after Daniel Bell-Drummond followed his trophy knock of 121* with a day-one score of 124 here.

Shafayat put on partnerships of 159 with Roberts (76), then 99 with Terry (36) to guide the visitors to 328-8 before they declared three runs behind their opponents’ 331-9d.

In Hampshire’s first innings yet more wickets from Dieter Klein (4-73), Jack Sheppard (2-45) and Tomlinson (2-87) made for a highly successful trip in all for most individuals in the squad.

24 points in total (including four bonus points each for batting and bowling) ensures that, after just two matches, Hampshire lie fourth in the Championship South Division, with all the teams above them having played at least twice as many matches.

Hampshire are next in SEC action against Middlesex next week, starting on Tuesday at Merchant Taylors’ School in Moor Park.
