Scorecard

An unbeaten 121 from Kent Second XI opener, Daniel Bell-Drummond guided his side to a 48-run victory over Hampshire in this 40-over Trophy match at Mote Park, Maidstone.

Just over a week after the two Countys’ First XIs had played out a severely rain-affected LV= County Championship draw in Tunbridge Wells, Bell-Drummond more than made up for his colleagues’ lack of time at the crease, putting on a 150-run partnership with former Durham player, Ben Harmison (73) – a player who was booed by his own fans for his lack of senior runs during the aforementioned LV=CC fixture.

And, despite two wickets apiece for visiting left-arm spinner Luke Beaven (2-42) and South African seamer Dieter Klein (2-36) as well as a single scalp for Kent favourite David Balcombe (1-57), the hosts made an impressive total of 259.

Chasing, Hampshire started reasonably promisingly with Bilal Shafayat putting on 64 runs and a 60 partnership with Luke Thomas for the third wicket to take their side to 92-3.

But once that combination was broken the visitors lost wickets regularly with only Adam Rouse (55) able to add another meaningful knock.

With fewer than three overs to go, the final wicket of Jack Sheppard would fall, giving home left-arm seamer Adam Ball (3-29) his third wicket; Hampshire were all out for 211.

It means the Ageas Bowl side have now lost their opening two competition matches and will look to register their first two points of the competition next Monday [25 June] against Middlesex at Merchant Taylors’ School.
