The rain may have affected how much play was had at Ventnor’s impressive Newclose County Ground, but it couldn’t stop the hosts from marching to a comfortable seven-wicket victory inside 26 overs of this Southern Electric Premier League match against the Hampshire Academy.

Indeed, it was a number of familiar faces who contributed to the youngsters’ demise as, set a rain-altered target of 102 from 31 overs, Ventnor chased it down with more than 30 balls to spare.

Batting first (having lost the toss) in difficult conditions in which no-one made a 50 all day, some decent Academy knocks from Matt King (34*) and Wilf Marriot (29) helped their side to 164-8 from their 50 overs.

That was despite some fine bowling performances from, amongst others, former Hampshire Second XI leg-spinner Jamie Miller (2-29), and former Hampshire under 13 and Under 17 cricketer, Adam Hose (2-31)... even the Academy’s own coach, Charlie Freeston (1-44) had a bowl at his young charges!

And the connections didn’t end there as Hose, together with current Second XI stars Jake George (9) and Ollie Mills (23) got their side across the line.

Hose, who was born in Newport and played for the MCC Young Cricketers this season, ended the innings on 43 not out off 60 balls.

It was a result that overturned the Academy’s massive 118-run reverse at The Ageas Bowl in June and may yet see the team from the Isle of Wight finish above the Young Royals come the end of next week’s final round of matches.
