A batting masterclass from experienced Hampshire trio, Jimmy Adams (49), Michael Carberry (61*) and Simon Katich (61*) earned their side a draw on day four of this LV= County Championship match against Yorkshire at Headingley Carnegie.

The Australian, who led the way on day one with a breath-taking 180 not out (the first 100 of which was scored at a run-a-ball), was once again the most eye-catching batsman on show, racing to his half century off a fluent 65 balls (including eight fours).

But Carberry and Adams provided excellent support; the former, in particular, being the very definition of stoic batting, scoring his 50 off 151 balls. He even had the gaul to bring up the landmark by hoisting Adil Rashid into the adjoining football stand for six, showing just how easy the England international was finding things.

Earlier in the day, the rain had practically put paid to any chances of an already improbable result, delaying the start until 12:30pm.

Nevertheless, a Hampshire collapse might - just might - have, even then, given their opponents a glimmer of hope and captain Adams ensured that didn't happen with a near-exemplory innings. Indeed, it was only the thinest of edges that saw him off.

But once his top-order colleagues came together, there would be no more mistakes seeing their side through to a shaking of hands at 5pm, with Hampshire leading their hosts by 219 runs.

Hampshire take 10 points from the match (three for the draw, five for batting and two for bowling) and will now prepare for their next Championship match against Glamorgan at The Ageas Bowl next week. Between them, however, they have a trip up to Glasgow to play the Scottish Saltires in the Clydesdale Bank 40 competition on Sunday.
