Three wickets each from David Balcombe and Liam Dawson propelled Hampshire to victory against Loughborough MCCU at The Ageas Bowl.
After resuming on 11-1, Hampshire extended their lead with Jimmy Adams (26no), Michael Carberry (47) and Sean Ervine (27no) seeing the home side to 111-2 at the lunch break which was followed immediately by the declaration, setting the students 391 to win.
Ervine and Chris Wood took the new ball for Hampshire and it was Wood who made the immediate impact taking two wickets in two balls to reduce Loughborough to 12-2 in the seventh over. Sam Billings followed up his first innings 49 with a classy innings as he and Evans put on 74 for the third wicket as the students tried to hang on for the draw. However, David Balcombe bowled an inspired spell taking 3-35, removing Evans (20), Daeche-Marshall (0) and Taylor (0) inside two overs.
The dismissal of Billings for 69 saw Loughborough slump from 116-6 to 166 all out as Liam Dawson ripped through the tail with 3-8 off 4.3 overs, Hampshire winning by 274 runs. Hampshire will go into their opening LV County Championship match with Gloucestershire at The Ageas Bowl on 12th April confident of a strong start to the season.
