Briggs Caps Dream Debut with Two Wickets
Briggs celebrates his first wicket in International cricket
Hampshire spinner duplicates Club legend's performance
Hampshire left-armer Danny Briggs capped an historic England debut by, in an incredible twist of fate, recording the same figures as Hampshire spin-bowling legend, Shaun Udal did on his International One Day International debut!
Briggs finished with figures of 2-39 from his 10 overs as England cruised to a four wicket win, and 4-0 Series white-wash of Pakistan in Dubai.
Eighteen years earlier (when Briggs, himself, was just two years old) Udal, who has a suite named after him at The Rose Bowl, had finished with the same figures, albeit off one more over, in his maiden List A appearance for his country against New Zealand at Edgbaston.
Briggs’s first international wicket came when his delivery to Umar Akmal was driven straight back down the ground to Jade Dernbach at long off who caught to send the Pakistani batsman back to the pavilion on just 12.
But that wasn’t the end of Briggs as he also claimed the wicket of Shoaib Malik (23). A straight delivery in his final over with the ball trapped the batsman lbw as he attempted a sweep.
It crowned a wonderful day for Briggs, who made Hampshire history by becoming the youngest ever player to make his full England debut, beating the record previously held by former Royal Chris Tremlett, aged 23.
Briggs also become the first ever player from the Isle of Wight to play a full England international game.
A second century in a row from former Hampshire player Kevin Pietersen helped England chase down a target of 237 with four balls remaining.
Briggs will now be hoping for more first-team opportunities during the three T20 Internationals against the same opposition in the next week.
