Briggs on his Way to the ICC T20 World Cup

Briggs in action for England over the winter

Briggs in action for England over the winter

Hampshire spinner, Danny Briggs named in 15-man England Squad

Hampshire spin bowler, Danny Briggs has been named in a 15-man England squad to travel to Sri Lanka for the ICC World T20 next month.

Briggs, who made history to become the youngest ever Hampshire player and the first Isle of Wight-born cricketer to play for his country when he made his ODI debut against Pakistan over the winter, will also be in contention for a place in England’s three-match T20 International Series against South Africa.

The squads – which are identical for both matches – were announced this morning [Tuesday 21 August] by the England selectors.

Stuart Broad will lead a squad which also includes former Hampshire player Michael Lumb for the first time since he moved from The Ageas Bowl to Nottinghamshire last season.

England will be looking to retain the Twenty20 World Cup trophy they won in 2010 in a competition which begins on 21 September against Afghanistan. Also in England’s group are India, whom they play on 23 September, before potentially entering the “Super 8s” section of the trophy.

Before then, the same squad complete an English summer of International cricket with T20 Internationals against South Africa on 8, 10 and 12 September, meaning Briggs could potentially miss Hampshire’s final two LV= County Championship matches against Essex and Derbyshire.

The spinner has been Hampshire’s leading Twenty20 wicket-taker, as well as the country’s leading slow-bowler for the last two seasons, collecting a club record of 31 scalps in the 2010 competition – the season the Royals created history by becoming the first British club to win the tournament on home turf.

This season he currently leads Hampshire’s Clydesdale Bank 40 wicket-taking charts and lies joint-third overall in the country, with 17 scalps. He was awarded his Hampshire cap during the opening match of the season against Gloucestershire at The Ageas Bowl.
