LV= County Championship

Usman Khawaja (71*) led something of a fightback for his Derbyshire side in the 30 overs that were possible on day two of Hampshire's final LV= County Championship match of the season at Derby.

Together with Tony Palladino (58) he put on 88 runs for the fourth wicket taking his side from 50-3 overnight to 137 by the time the nightwatchman was out, flicking Sean Ervine to James Tomlinson at mid-on.

Ervine (2-17 off six overs) then picked up a second, getting one to move away from Dan Redfern, giving Liam Dawson his 35th slip catch of the season; Derbyshire 147-5.

Khawaja and Ross Whiteley added 20 more runs to the total before lunch before rain kept the players off for the remainder of the day.

It means this match is still very finely balanced with much, you suspect, relying on how far Khawaja can go in this innings and whether his team can stay with him long enough to equal or better Hampshire's first innings deposit of 272.

Elsewhere, Essex - the only side who can overtake Hampshire in fourth - are struggling against Yorkshire having been bowled out for 177 in response to the White Rose's 312. That result won't matter too much to Derbyshire if Kent continue to struggle against Glamorgan.
