Derbyshire Hold Final Test for Hants

Captain Jimmy Adams in action against Essex last week

Captain Jimmy Adams in action against Essex last week

Full squad and match preview ahead of Hampshire's final LV= County Championship match of the season against Derbyshire in Derby

Derbyshire v Hampshire
LV= County Championship
Tues 11 – Fri 14 September (10.35am start)
County Ground, Derby

Hampshire go into the final LV= County Championship match of the season realistically playing only to protect their fourth-placed position against a Derbyshire side that have set the Division Two pace throughout the Summer.

Jimmy Adams’ side go to the table-toppers, 24 points (the maximum that can be scored for a win) behind Yorkshire in the second and final promotion spot, so even a single bonus point for the White Rose county against Essex will officially put an end to Hampshire’s promotion credentials. Third-placed Kent travel to bottom side Glamorgan 19 points ahead of Hampshire so even overtaking them seems a long-shot.

With that in mind – and the knowledge that the team play a Clydesdale Bank 40 Final on Saturday – one change is made to squad for this match with batsman Simon Katich rested. Chris Wood is expected to take his place having sat out last week’s match against Essex, but Kabir Ali and Hamza Riazuddin are also in the squad as options. Danny Briggs (on International duty) and Dimitri Mascarenhas (injured) continue to miss out.

As far as Derbyshire are concerned, a 222-run loss to Kent last week means things are a little closer than they would like them to be at the top of the table, but their promotion fate is still very much in their own hands. Interestingly, however, having been unwilling to set up a match when the two sides met at The Ageas Bowl earlier in the season – and potentially needing a win this week to ensure top flight status in 2013 – the power may very well be in Hampshire skipper Adams’ hands should there be some bad weather about!

The full Hampshire squad for Tuesday’s game is as follows:

Full Squad:

(4) Jimmy Adams* (21) James Tomlinson
(7) Sean Ervine (25) Chris Wood
(8) Liam Dawson (33) Kabir Ali
(14) James Vince (38) Hamza Riazuddin
(15) Michael Carberry (46) Bilal Shafayat
(16) Michael Bates (84) David Balcombe
(18) David Griffiths
