A quick-fire 66 from trialist Glenn Maxwell and a bowling return of 3-17 for James Tomlinson were not enough to seal victory for Hampshire in this Second Eleven Trophy match as they lost by three wickets to Essex at The Ageas Bowl.

After rain delayed the start, a relatively inexperienced Hampshire side won the toss and decided to bat on the Ageas Bowl main ground in a rain-reduced 31 over game. And it was Maxwell who proved to be main contributor of the Hampshire innings with his knock coming from 43 balls (6x4, 3x6).

His fourth-wicket partnership with Robert Gibson was particularly important as the duo put on 50 (the highest partnership of the match) inside seven overs. Even after Gibson (16) was stumped, Maxwell continued to flourish hitting a four to bring up his half century followed by a six off Reece Topley.

But when spin was bought into the attack the run scoring slowed and the wickets started to fall with Tim Phillips (0-23 off 4.5), Jon Carpenter (3-23 off 7) and Nic Browne (2-13 off 5) proving effective. The Hampshire innings was brought to the end at 137 when Ollie Makin was run out for 11 with 19 balls to spare.

The Essex reply didn’t start well as experienced seamer Tomlinson (who was returning from a foot injury) - paired with trialist Calum Haggett (0-29 off 5) - continuously beat the Essex top order for pace restricting them to 22-2 after seven overs.

But after losing Michael Comber (10) to a mix-up in the running, with the score on 47-3 the Essex pairing of Ben Foakes (32) & Kishen Velani (28) maintained the required run rate with a partnership of 38. And when the former fell to Makin (1-22 off 4), Phillips (18) came in and continued in the same vein with a partnership of 27 in just under five overs.

The off-spin of Maxwell (1-12 off 6 and a run out) offered a glimmer of hope to the home side leaving Essex on 118-6 and requiring 20 off the last 3.5 overs. But Henry Ramsden chipped in with 16 from 16 balls to dampen any hope of a Hampshire win, taking 12 off of the 29th over before being removed by Tomlinson with one run needed. Carpenter finished the innings with a top edge over the slip cordon to clench victory and the two points for Essex.
