Shafayat Hits Out as Seconds Secure Two Wins Over Kent

Bilal Shafayat scored 186 runs in the two matches combined

Bilal Shafayat scored 186 runs in the two matches combined

Match Report: Hampshire 2XI v Kent 2XI

HAMPSHIRE 2ND XI V KENT 2ND XI
ECB T20
FRIDAY 1ST JUNE 2012
THE AGEAS BOWL (NURSERY GROUND)

Hampshire’s Second XI gave a great precursor to the First XI’s LV= County Championship trip to Tunbridge Wells next week with two wins in the ECB T20 competition at The Ageas Bowl.

Furthermore, there were, once again, good performances from the likes of David Griffiths, Hamza Riazuddin and Bilal Shafayat to ensure they continued to re-state their claim for First XI cricket as and when the opportunity arises.

Hampshire Team:
MDT Roberts, GJ Maxwell, BM Shafayat, SP Terry, AP Rouse+, H Riazuddin, JSD Haggaty, DA Griffiths*, JA Tomlinson, JD Sheppard, LE Beaven

Match One Summary: Hampshire 2nd XI won by 3 runs

Hampshire: 185-5
Kent: 182-9
Scorecard

Bowling figures of 4-26 for Griffiths alongside an impressive 111 from Shafayat proved just enough to prevent Charlie Hemphrey (86) steering Kent to victory as Hampshire 2nd XI won by just three runs in their first encounter.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, Hampshire lost two early wickets to Kent opening bowler Ben Kemp (2-36 from 4). But this only brought Shafayat (111) and Sean Terry (25) to the crease who shared a magnificent 124-run partnership in just under 13 overs. Recently signed batsman Shafayat reached his century within the partnership before Terry fell to Matt Greenwood (3-18 off 3) who then removed Shafayat on nelson (15x4, 4x6). A late flurry of runs from Riazuddin (23) ensured Hampshire reached a challenging total of 185.

The Kent reply started slowly as experienced bowlers Griffiths and James Tomlinson (1-30 off 4) removed the top three leaving Kent 24-3 after 4 overs. T20 signing Glenn Maxwell then dismissed Fabian Cowdrey without scoring. The 7th over introduced Jack Sheppard (1-21 off 2) to the attack taking a wicket with his first ball leaving the visitors 45-5.

Hemphrey combined with Simon Cook (40) to offer Kent hope as the former reached his score from just 41 balls (hitting 10 fours and 5 sixes) before being caught on the boundary by Griffiths off the bowling of Maxwell (2-33 off 3). Then, after hitting 18 off of the first four balls of the 17th over, the latter was removed thanks to an athletic catch on the boundary from Shafayat.

The next over saw Griffiths (4-26 off 4) return to the attack, taking two wickets in two balls before containing the Kent tail in the final over and securing victory for the home side.

Match Two Summary: Hampshire 2nd XI won by 41 runs
Hampshire: 160-6
Kent: 119 all out
Scorecard

Another impressive batting performance from Shafayat (75) and strong bowling performance from trialist Luke Beaven (3-20) made sure Hampshire took four points from the double header, winning the second of the two games by a more convincing 41 runs.

Electing to field, Kent started well with Hampshire 15-3 after three overs, Kemp (2-28 off 4) and Cook (2-16 off 4) doing the damage. But, again, Shafayat rescued Hampshire combining well with Academy products Riazuddin (32*) and Adam Rouse (26) in partnerships of 43 and 61 respectively. Shafayat reached his 50 in style with a six in the 13th over and carried on to bat fluently reaching his 75 from 39 balls before being caught by Daniel Bell-Drummond in the deep.  Beaven (15) added late runs to help Hampshire reach 160-6.

Bell-Drummond (20) and Chris Piesley (42) started the visitors innings well before Beaven (3-20 off 4) was introduced to the attack. He claimed the wickets of both openers and also ran out Alex Blake (5) before, shortly after, removing Charlie Hemphrey (1) to help put Kent on the back foot at 80-5.

James Thompson (20) offered some resistance, hitting three sixes in his 12 ball stay prior to being bowled by James Haggaty (1-2 off 1). And bowlers Tomlinson (2-20 off 4) and Griffiths (1-11 off 3.1) cleaned up the Kent tail securing a 41 run victory and the second lot of two points.
