A second eleven best of 81 from Chris Wood and a five-wicket haul for trialist Dieter Klein were the home side’s highlights in this Second Eleven Championship match on the Ageas Bowl nursery ground, which ended in a draw between Hampshire and Surrey’s Second strings.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat - a decision that looked good when Michael Roberts (24) and Sean Terry (40) put on 72 for the first wicket before the latter was caught behind off the bowling of Matt Dunn. But Surrey then gained the upper hand as they took the next four Hampshire wickets for just 22 runs thanks to their pace bowlers.

However, the home side’s middle order put up some strong resistance as Wood (who has previously scored two centuries and a 92 for the Academy) and Adam Rouse (24) put on 55 for the next wicket and another good partnership of 75 between Wood and Jake George (38) took the home side to 224 before Freddie van den Bergh ended Wood's innings (which included eleven fours and two sixes). Academy pair George and Robert Gibson (28*) moved the score on to 258 before van den Bergh (2-66) had the former stumped by wicketkeeper Michael Burgess. The last two wickets then fell for the addition of 30 runs taking the Hampshire side to 284 all out.

The Surrey reply started badly in ideal bowling conditions as Klein took three early wickets to leave them on 32-3 after 12 overs. Hampshire then gained momentum as Jack Sheppard (1-25) took over the bowling and snared Tom Jewell without scoring. And another change from the other end, bringing Hamza Riazuddin into the attack, also paid dividends as he had Jack Winslade caught behind by Rouse, also for a duck; it’s fair to say the visitors finished the first day in trouble on 48-5 from 18 overs.

On day two, however, George Edwards (23) and Arun Harinath (103*) put up some early resistance to push the score on to 92 before Riazuddin (2-18) removed the former. With Gary Wilson (12) returning from first team action Surrey had experience at the crease but even he was undone by Klein (5-35) who then also had Burgess (1) caught low down to a diving James Vince in the slips. Tim Linley (32) then frustrated the Hampshire bowlers, putting on 66 for the ninth wicket before Vince produced a fine delivery which found a thin edge from Linley's bat; caught behind by Rouse. There was a brief pause while Harinath reached his century (including 14 fours and one six) but Vince (2-1), at the start of his second over, ended the Surrey innings when van den Bergh (1) was caught by Roberts.

Hampshire's second innings didn't start as well as the first as they lost Terry (10); caught behind off Chris Jordan. Riazuddin (20) and Roberts (43) pushed the home side’s score to 75 before the former gave keeper Burgess another catch (he would end with five in the second innings alone), this time from Dunn's bowling (1-20). Roberts’ wicket soon followed before Vince (19) added 22 with Wilf Marriott (19) only to be removed by Edwards (1-30), his partner the fourth batsman to be caught behind. And Wood (17) couldn't repeat his first innings display as he fell to Jordan (2-40); Hampshire 145-6.

Rouse (66*), however, steered the Hampshire lower order (which also saw another good innings of 39 from George) to a declaration (with nine wickets down) at lunch on 252. That left the visitors 327 to win in 66 overs.

South African, Klein signified Hampshire's intentions when he had first innings centurion Harinath (1) caught behind in his first over but he couldn't prevent a 50 partnership between Dominic Sibley (26) and Tom Lancefield (32). The pair seemed to lay anchor before Riazuddin (2-15) removed both in his consecutive overs. The tide really turned when Klein (2-43) returned to the attack to bowl Wilson (16) for the addition of 15 runs leaving Surrey 85-4 after 29. And when Jewell (67) and Jordan (62*) joined forces all three results looked possible but the duo sailed through the next 28 overs unscathed taking the score to 210 with a 125-run partnership before spin offered a wicket from Gibson (1-20). However, this was too late as, four overs later, both captains agreed to settle for a draw.

Hampshire came away slightly better off, taking ten points from the match to Surrey’s nine. They play again on Monday in the Second XI Trophy against Gloucestershire, followed by their final home Championship match of the season against the same opponents.
