Match Report: Hampshire 2XI v Surrey 2XI SET20

HAMPSHIRE 2ND XI V SURREY 2ND XI
ECB T20
FRIDAY 8 JUNE 2012
THE AGEAS BOWL (NURSERY GROUND)

Hampshire’s Second XI ECB T20 competition came to a disappointing conclusion with two losses against a strong Surrey side including the likes of former Hampshire player Chris Tremlett and Ireland International Gary Wilson.

Nevertheless, it did mark a return for Neil McKenzie to The Ageas Bowl and some valuable short-form practise for some others likely to feature in Thursday’s senior team opening Friends Life t20 match away to South Coast rivals Sussex.

Hampshire Team:
Vince, Roberts, Terry, Marshall, Rouse+, Riazuddin, Briggs, Haggaty (McKenzie), Griffiths*, King, Sheppard
Surrey Team:
Burns+ (Wilson), Lancefield, Spriegel*, Wilson, Harinath, Sibley, Jordan, Edwards, Winslade, Tremlett, Rollings

Match One Summary: Surrey 2nd XI won by 15 runs
Surrey: 135-3
Hampshire: 120-7
Scorecard

In a rain reduced game of 18 overs, a good batting performance from Tom Lancefield (45) in a low scoring affair ensured Surrey took the first two points of the day.

After being put into bat in difficult overhead conditions, the visitors made a slow start, scoring just 66 from the opening ten overs. They then tried to push on the run rate on, scoring 12 off the next over before wicketkeeper Rory Burns (28) skied a catch to counterpart Adam Rouse in Glenn Maxwell’s (1-21 off 4) final over. Maxwell was thrown into action again, taking a catch just inside the boundary rope to dismiss Surrey captain Matthew Spriegel (3). Opener Lancefield (45) then tried to accelerate but failed to do so, hitting a Jack Sheppard (1-18 off 3) ball straight to James Vince on the long off boundary. Gary Wilson (28) added valuable late runs to take Surrey to 135-3.

Experienced opening bowlers Chris Tremlett and Chris Jordan (1-21 off 4) prevented Hampshire from starting quickly removing Vince (4) and Michael Roberts (10) respectively. Hampshire then lost two further wickets in as many overs leaving them 25-4. Rouse (26) and Hamza Riazuddin offered the home side hope, taking the score to 80-5 at the end of the 12th over when the former fell to Jack Winslade (2-16 off 3). Riazuddin (51*) pushed his score to a half-century with a drive down the ground from the bowling of Tremlett (2-23 off 4) for two. The target proved too much with Hampshire falling 15 runs short of the Surrey total.

Match Two Summary: Surrey 2nd XI won by 5 wickets
Hampshire: 172-6
Surrey: 174-5
Scorecard

The second match of the double header saw one change to the Hampshire side with McKenzie replacing James Haggaty. Surrey also made a change with Wilson taking over the gloves from Burns.

Vince (36) and Roberts (40) set the tempo, scoring just under ten runs per over for the first seven with both hitting five fours and a six. The introduction of spin from Matthew Spriegel (3-30 off 4) slowed the run rate down, as he removed both openers and recently arrived McKenzie (2). Australian-raised pair Maxwell (27) and Sean Terry (31) combined well, adding 44 from 28 balls to take the score to 139-4 before the former was bowled by Chris Jordan (2-21 off 4). Riazuddin (21*) continued in good form to help Hampshire reach 172-6.

Surrey matched their hosts’ early innings run rate but with the loss of two wickets as David Griffiths (1-29 off 4) dismissed Burns (10) caught behind, and Jack Sheppard (1-24 off 2) having Tom Lancefield (1) caught by Terry with the score on 30. Gary Wilson (24) and Spriegel (65*) seemed settled before Vince (1-23 off 3) picked up a rare wicket having Wilson caught behind from a bouncer. That introduced Arun Harinath (56) who, along with Spriegel, took surrey to within sight of the finishing line with a partnership of 103 in just over ten overs before Harinath was given lbw to Danny Briggs (1-30 off 3.4). Needing 12 from the last over Spriegel kept calm, steering Surrey to victory with two balls to spare and leaving Hampshire out of the qualifying position for the ECB T20 Finals Day.
