Scorecard
A fine innings of 95 not out from Sussex batsman, Matt Machan confirmed a fairly comprehensive Second XI Trophy victory for the hosts as they chased down 189 with two overs and four wickets to spare.
Hampshire’s innings was one built around two main partnerships but, sadly, little else. Having won the toss and elected to bat, a partnership of 48 between Michael Roberts and Fahim Querishi gave the visitors a decent start, taking the score to 56-2 in the 12th over.
But Roberts’ (28) wicket triggered several more in quick succession and, when Querishi was out little more than 12 overs later for 41 with the score at 112 for 6, a low score seemed likely.
However, another fine stand of 53 between Rob Gibson (39) and Tom Nugent (23*) saw Hampshire through to a total of 188 all out with 2 balls of the allotted 40 overs remaining – a considerable improvement on what it might have been.
In reply, however, Sussex were always ahead of the eight-ball. They began with an opening stand of 70 between Machan and the experienced Joe Gatting which ended with a fine catch by Jake George off Nugent's (2-19) bowling to dismiss the latter for 22.
But 21 year old Machan remained in command of the innings, having the confidence to play second fiddle to Kirk Wernars as the South African skipper made 27 in the duo’s 36-run partnership. And when the latter left, Sussex’s score of 115-3 compared favourably to Hampshire’s aforementioned 112-6 at the same stage (in the 25th over).
With rain on its way the hosts rounded things off quickly, Machan hitting 10 fours in his 116-ball stay at the crease.
Indeed, steady rain did arrive about 15 minutes after the end of the game, but had it come earlier, Sussex were ahead of the Duckworth / Lewis score and would have won anyway.
