Sussex Second XI v Hampshire Second XI
ECB T20 Cup
Monday 28 May 2012
Preston Nomads
Hampshire’s Second XI suffered defeat twice at the hands of a strong Sussex side in Monday’s ECB T20 Cup double header at Preston Nomads.
Electing to bat first both times, they had their total chased down by a team that included the likes of occasional First XI wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd, 2011 Ageas Bowl Championship centurion Luke Wells and England international Amjad Khan with more than an over to spare.
Match One Summary: Sussex beat Hampshire by 5 wickets
Hampshire Second XI: 115ao (19.3 ovs)
Sussex Second XI: 117-5 (18.1 ovs)
A 34-run partnership between Bilal Shafayat (34) and Glenn Maxwell (32) for the third wicket had looked promising for Hampshire in the first match.
Both men played fluently with the former stroking five fours in his 20-ball innings and the latter five sixes in a typically hard-hitting 12-ball stay at the crease.
But once the Australian left with the score on 65-3 no-one else was able to stick around long enough to make a huge difference, Hamza Riazuddin (20) the only other player to subsequently make double figures.
And asked to protect an admittedly under-par 115, the visiting attack struggled to contain, off-spinner Oli Making (3-23) the most clinincal, Riazuddin (1-17) the most economical.
In the end, it was Hodd (18*) and Khan (6*) who saw their side across the line with 11 balls to go.
Match Two Summary: Sussex beat Hampshire by 6 wickets
Hampshire Second XI: 141-4
Sussex Second XI: 143-4 (18.3 ovs)
In the second game, the batting was better; Unicorns opener, Michael Roberts (42), wicketkeeper Adam Rouse (32*) and Riazuddin (40*) all chipping in with some decent knocks.
This time the Royals batted out their 20 overs for the loss of just four wickets, setting Sussex a target of 142 for victory.
But, led by a Kirk Wernars 54-ball 63 the Sharks once again knocked off the runs with 9 deliveries to go; Riazuddin (1-31), Makin (1-30), David Griffiths (1-18) and a Maxwell run-out accounting for the wickets.
Hampshire’s next competition matches are against Kent on Friday at The Ageas Bowl.
