A knock of 80 from Oxfordshire-born batsman Michael Roberts wasn’t quite enough to earn victory for Hampshire as they lost this Second Eleven Trophy encounter against Surrey off the penultimate ball at the Ageas Bowl nursery ground.
In a match that included a number of players with first eleven experience, Surrey won the toss and decided to field after rain reduced the match to 30 overs. And Surrey captain Matthew Spriegel looked to have made the right decision when Tim Linley bowled James Vince (1) inside the first over. That introduced Sean Terry (22) to the crease and he combined well with Roberts, putting on a 62 partnership before the former was caught by Tom Jewell off the bowling of George Edwards.
Roberts' partnerships of 36 with Jake George (17) and 35 with Chris Wood (11) then brought the home side’s score to 144-5 after 24 overs. And, with six overs remaining, Roberts looked to push the score on but was unsuccessful as he was removed in Jewell's first over of his second spell.
The same bowler then also had Adam Rouse (13) caught by Freddie van den Bergh and Linley (2-21 from 6) had Wilf Marriott (0) caught by Rory Hamilton-Brown. Jewell returned to finish the innings, recording impressive bowling figures of 4-21 from his 6 overs.
The visitors’ innings started in similar fashion, losing the wicket of Tom Lancefield (1) to fast bowler David Balcombe (2-25 from 6), and the same bowler then picked up the wicket of Hamilton-Brown (26) after the opener had played a good innings (going at a run a ball hitting four fours and a six.)
But then a partnership of 63 between Spriegel (68*) and Gary Wilson (32) - the highest of the game – turned the tide before the latter was bowled by Kabir Ali (1-26 from 6). And his replacement, Dominic Sibley (18), also batted well with Spriegel, putting on 42 for the fourth wicket before being bowled by David Griffiths (1-34 from 6) at the end of the 26th over.
Surrey’s first innings star, Jewell then added a tasty cameo, scoring 13 from just 8 balls to take Surrey within touching distance of the 2 points on 151-5. Spriegel then hit the penultimate ball of the game for four to secure the win and points for the Surrey side; Hampshire looking to gain revenge in the Second XI Championship over the next three days.
