An excellent bowling display from Hampshire Second XI spinner Luke Beaven couldn’t quite prevent his team from suffering defeat by the narrowest of margins in this low-scoring Second XI Trophy match against Middlesex at Merchant Taylors’ School, Moor Park.

Beaven, who has some top-level experience in List A cricket having played for the Unicorns in this season’s Clydesdale Bank 40 competition, took six wickets (three of them lbw) at the expense of just 26 runs from his eight overs as the visitors attempted to protect a score of 108.

It was a feat that looked unlikely when the hosts made it within three runs of victory with only seven wickets down but two scalps in one Jack Sheppard over gave Hampshire hope. Alas, Corey Collymore, who has twice taken LV=County Championship four-fers for Sussex against Hampshire, stepped up to hit the winning runs, gifting Middlesex a one wicket victory with 7.3 overs remaining.

Earlier, Adam Rouse had top scored for Hampshire with a score of 42 off 56 balls, including four fours.

The result leaves Hampshire bottom of the South Division table after three matches and still looking to record their first win of the Trophy season.

They now play the same opposition in the Second XI Championship before next being in action against Glamorgan in SET / SEC double-header which has been rescheduled for Tuesday 10 - Friday 13 July to avoid clashing with the funeral of former Glamorgan and Surrey batsman Tom Maynard.
