The last time these two played a One Day International at The Ageas Bowl, the match was a cracker and there’s every reason to believe that a repeat performance on 16 September 2013 is on the cards!
On that occasion, England batsman Eoin Morgan scored the first of his two South Coast centuries during the 2010 summer guiding England to a four wicket victory having chased down Australia’s score of 267-7 with four overs to spare.
That proved sweet revenge for the Three Lions’ previous season, six-wicket reverse at the home of Hampshire Cricket – a match in which the team from down under only made sure of victory inside the final two overs.
All of which means that ODI honours are even at The Ageas Bowl for these two great rivals going into 2013’s clash so there will be plenty to be fired-up for – particularly as the match is the fifth and final one of the NatWest Series and could potentially, therefore, be the decider!
Australia’s One-Day International honours are impressive, having won the 50-Over World Cup on four occasions and the Champions Trophy twice – in both of the last two tournaments, no less! It certainly compares favourably to England’s four runners-up finishes across the two tournaments.
But form was pretty even in the last major ODI tournament before 2013 – 2011’s World Cup in the Indian subcontinent. Both finished third in their groups, losing in the quarter-finals to eventual finalists, Sri Lanka and India.
In the historic one-day head-to-head charts between the two teams England have won 46 to Australia’s 67 victories in the 117 matches between the two. There have also been two ties and only two no results.
